Good to know

Six things about garden birds

Fox

The fox will call

Hens, ducks and quail must be shut in a fox-proof house every night, without fail.

Flock

Never one alone

These are flock birds. Keep at least three hens, a pair of ducks, or several finches.

Flu

Bird flu rules

When bird flu is about, keepers may be told to keep poultry indoors. Check the current rules.

Rats

Tidy feed, no rats

Spilt feed attracts rats. Use a feeder they cannot reach, and put it away at night.

Grit

Grit and shell

Hens need grit to grind their food, and crushed shell for strong eggshells.

Noise

No cockerel needed

Hens lay eggs without a cockerel. Your neighbours will thank you.

Pets that pay rent

Three hens will give a family more eggs than it can eat, and make a mess of the flower beds. Most people who keep them say it is a fair exchange.
