Good to know

Six things about the duck

Name

Why call duck?

Hunters once used these loud little ducks to call wild ducks down to the water.

Loud

A very big voice

The female has a high, carrying quack out of all proportion to her size.

Small

A bantam duck

It is the smallest breed of domestic duck, about a quarter of the weight of a farm duck.

Water

It must have water

A duck has to dip its whole head under water to keep its eyes and nostrils clean.

Slug

Slug patrol

Ducks eat slugs and snails, and are gentler on a garden than hens.

Oil

Waterproofed by hand

It spreads oil from a gland near its tail over its feathers with its bill.

Every day

Looking after one

Keep a pair or trio with a secure house, a run and water deep enough to dip their heads in, changed often. Feed duck pellets and greens.

Think first

Before you get one

Call ducks are friendly and comical, and very noisy. Ducks make everything wet and muddy.
