Good to know

Six things about parrots

Fly

Time out of the cage

A pet bird needs to fly in a safe room every day. A cage is somewhere to sleep and eat, not to live.

Talk

Why they talk

Parrots copy the sounds of their flock. In a house, the flock is you.

Chew

They chew everything

A parrot's beak is a tool and a toy. Give it wood and toys to destroy, or it will choose its own.

Fumes

Kitchen fumes can kill

Fumes from overheated non-stick pans, aerosols and scented candles are deadly to birds.

Bored

Boredom is the enemy

A lonely, bored parrot may scream or pull out its own feathers.

Years

Decades

A budgie may live ten years. A macaw or cockatoo may live sixty.

A flock of two

A parrot is a wild animal that has agreed to live with you. It needs flight, company and things to do, and the big ones need them for longer than most marriages last.
