The cockapoo that follows you

This page is a walk along the footpath with a small dog. Move your pointer and your dog will scamper after you. Choose a different dog at the bottom, and tap the notes to open them.

01 · MixHalf spaniel, half poodle

A cockapoo is a cross between a cocker spaniel and a miniature or toy poodle. It is not a pedigree breed.

02 · OldThe first designer dog

It was first bred on purpose in the United States in the 1960s, long before other poodle crosses.

03 · CoatEvery one is different

The coat can be tight curls, loose waves or nearly straight, even among puppies of the same litter.

04 · ShedLess hair on the sofa

Many shed very little, thanks to the poodle side, but no dog is truly free of allergens.

05 · SmartQuick to learn

Poodles and spaniels are both clever working breeds, and cockapoos pick up training fast.

06 · TopOne of the most popular

It has become one of the commonest dogs in Britain.

Good to know

Six things about small dogs

Walks

Still need walking

A small dog needs daily walks and play, even if it could get all its exercise in the hallway.

Noses

Flat faces struggle

Dogs bred with very short noses, such as pugs and French bulldogs, often have trouble breathing and keeping cool.

Backs

Mind the stairs

Long-backed breeds like the dachshund can hurt their spines jumping on and off furniture.

Teeth

Crowded teeth

Small mouths hold the same 42 teeth as a big dog's. They need cleaning.

Train

Train them too

Small dogs are often let off things that a big dog would be taught not to do. They are just as able to learn.

Years

A long life

Small breeds usually live longer than large ones: fifteen years is not unusual.

Small dog, big character

Small dogs fit small homes, but they are still dogs. Most were bred to hunt, and have more energy and nerve than their size suggests.
